Testing Sign-Up and Email Flows with a Temporary Inbox

· 4 min read · by TempDog Team

Every sign-up form needs testing: does the welcome email arrive, does the confirmation link work, does the password reset expire when it should? Using your own inbox for this gets messy fast. A temporary inbox gives you a clean address in one second.

What a temporary inbox is good for

  • Manual checks before a release. Sign up as a new user, confirm the email, reset the password, and see exactly what a customer sees.
  • Checking how an email looks. Subject line, sender name, preview text, images and links, in a normal inbox.
  • Testing one-time codes and expiring links. Set a short lifetime and confirm the flow still works end to end.
  • Testing your own site’s protection. Some products block disposable domains on purpose. A temporary address shows you whether that block works.

A simple manual test

  1. Open TempDog and copy the address.
  2. Sign up on your site, or the staging version of it.
  3. Check the inbox: did the email arrive, and how long did it take?
  4. Open the confirmation link and finish the flow.
  5. Request a password reset and check that the old link stops working after the new one arrives.

Images are hidden until you press Load images, which also shows you how your email looks for people who block images by default.

Need the same test user tomorrow? Press Change duration to keep the address for days, and Save access so teammates can open the same inbox with the key.

When to use a dedicated testing tool instead

A temporary email site is made for people, not scripts. TempDog has no API, and that is on purpose. For automated or large tests, use a tool built for it:

  • A local email catcher on your own machine or test server, so test emails never leave your network.
  • A testing service with an API, so your automated tests can read codes and links directly.
  • Your email provider’s sandbox mode, if it has one, to test sending without reaching real inboxes.

These keep test data private and avoid sending thousands of emails to a public service.

Good habits

  • Never use real customer data in test sign-ups.
  • Use a fresh address for each test run, so old emails do not confuse the result.
  • Do not use temporary addresses to create fake accounts on someone else’s service. Test your own product.
