Using a Temporary Email for Verification Codes

· 4 min read · by TempDog Team

Many sites ask you to confirm your email before you can do anything. You type an address, wait for a six-digit code or a link, and only then get in. A temporary email handles this well, as long as you pick the right lifetime for the account.

How it works

  1. Open TempDog. Your address is ready at the top of the page.
  2. Press Copy and paste the address into the sign-up form.
  3. Keep the TempDog tab open. The code or link arrives in the inbox, usually within seconds.
  4. Copy the code, or open the link, to finish signing up.

If the code does not arrive, check the address for a typo, wait a minute, and use the site’s Resend code button. Some sites block known temporary domains. If that happens, the site wants a long-term address, and that tells you something too.

When a temporary email is the right choice

  • Downloads and one-off forms. A white paper, a coupon, a single PDF.
  • Forums and comment sections you will visit once.
  • Free Wi-Fi portals and guest sign-ups.
  • Trying an app before deciding whether to keep it.

For these, set a short lifetime, or turn on Close after first email so the address shuts itself 10 minutes after the code arrives.

When it is the wrong choice

A verification email is often not the last email. The same address is used later for password resets, security alerts and receipts. If the address is gone, so is your way back in.

Use your real address, or an alias that forwards to it, for:

  • Banking, payments and anything with your money.
  • Healthcare, government and tax services.
  • Accounts you would be upset to lose: social media you post on, cloud storage, work tools.

The middle ground: keep it longer

Sometimes you want an account for a few weeks, not forever. A course with a trial, a marketplace for one purchase, a beta test.

  • Press Change duration and set up to 30 days.
  • Press Save access to get a secret key and a QR code. With it you can reopen the same inbox later, on any device, even after closing the tab.

When the timer ends, the address and its emails are deleted, and the address is never given to anyone else. Nobody can take it over later to reset your password.

Quick checklist

  • Will I need this account after 30 days? If yes, use your real address or an alias. For a few weeks, use a long lifetime and save the key.
  • Does the account hold money or personal data? Use your real address.
  • Just need one code? Use a short lifetime and Close after first email.
